Learning, wellbeing and belonging through the natural world

At Mount Kelly, nature is not a backdrop to school life. It is a classroom, a teacher and a companion in our pupils’ everyday experiences.

Set on the edge of Dartmoor, our unique location allows pupils to develop a deep and meaningful connection with the natural world. Through purposeful outdoor learning, environmental stewardship and time spent immersed in nature, pupils grow in curiosity while developing a strong sense of responsibility for the world around them.

A campus shaped by its environment

Our grounds, woodlands and surrounding landscapes provide rich opportunities for learning beyond the classroom. Whether exploring habitats, observing seasonal change, or simply finding space to think and reflect, pupils benefit from daily contact with nature in a way that feels natural and unforced.

This connection supports wellbeing, encourages independence and helps pupils to develop perspective, empathy and balance in a busy world.

The Nature Connectivity Project

The Mount Kelly Nature Connectivity Project brings together curriculum learning, wellbeing and environmental awareness in a structured and research-informed programme.

  • Through regular engagement with nature, pupils:
  • Develop greater emotional regulation and resilience
  • Improve focus, attendance and engagement with learning
  • Build confidence through challenge and exploration
  • Learn to care for and protect the natural environment

The project extends beyond Mount Kelly, working in partnership with local primary schools to share best practice and support children across our wider community.

Nature across the curriculum

Nature-based learning is woven throughout school life at Mount Kelly. Pupils may encounter it through:

  • Outdoor science investigations and fieldwork
  • Geography and environmental studies
  • Art, creative writing and reflection
  • Physical activity and outdoor adventure
  • Quiet moments of mindfulness and restoration

This integrated approach ensures that time outdoors is purposeful, inclusive and enriching for every pupil.

Biodiversity in action: Dr Nicola Quick

Mount Kelly’s commitment to nature is strengthened through our partnership with Dr Nicola Quick, of Plymouth University,  marine biologist, conservationist and founder of the Biodiversity Project who, along with grant funding from the Royal Society, brings nature and science to life.

Dr Quick works closely with Mount Kelly pupils and staff to bring real-world biodiversity research into school life. Through her project, pupils engage with authentic scientific thinking, learning how data is collected, analysed and used to protect ecosystems locally and globally.

The Biodiversity Project encourages pupils to:

  • Understand the importance of biodiversity and healthy ecosystems
  • Develop scientific curiosity and critical thinking
  • Recognise the impact of human activity on the natural world
  • Feel empowered to contribute to positive environmental change

By connecting pupils with an active researcher working at the forefront of conservation, the project makes environmental learning meaningful, current and inspiring. It reinforces our belief that education should not only inform, but equip young people to act with responsibility and integrity.

Wellbeing at the heart of school life

Time spent in nature plays an important role in supporting mental and emotional wellbeing. Pupils learn to slow down, observe and reconnect, developing self-awareness and calm alongside courage and confidence.

In a world of constant stimulation, our natural environment offers space to breathe, reflect and grow.

Growing responsible global citizens

By fostering respect for nature, we help pupils develop a broader understanding of sustainability, stewardship and community. Pupils are encouraged to think critically about their impact on the environment and to act with integrity, compassion and commitment.

Nature at Mount Kelly is not about doing more, but about doing better. Creating space for pupils to thrive, to belong and to grow into thoughtful, grounded young people.
